DASTAK – A THEATRE NOTE

History of Indian theatre is rooted way back in ancient India when Sanskrit developed as an earliest form of theatre in India. It emerged sometime between 2nd century and 1st C.E . Generally people perceive ‘performance on stage’ as theatre but theatre is a much wider term that engulfs all the processes , training, and conditioning that an artist goes through before putting his/her performance on stage .According to Indian classical literature, theatre depicts ‘rasso utpatti’ an arousal of various emotions which in turn depicts resplendent brimming with universal human feelings and sentiments and conveyance of which by an artist on stage to the audience lets them feel the aroused feelings . This process enables the audience to feel the aroused emotions ‘ Rasso anubhooti’ as well. Theatre as per “ greek literature” leads to sublimation of feelings and catharsis which blesses theatre to have medicinal and therapeutic effects on human being as well. This quality of theatre is being explored at large in the west now a day to cure certain physical limitations, psychological ailments and even social problems of many people. Medicinal or therapist effects of theatre are so well pronounced and recognized these days that it is being put to use cure mental retardness and slow learning to improve behavior of criminal in jails to help businessmen & professionals to learn effective communication skill and obviously to bust stress as well. It is in vogue to use theatre as a drama break an audio- visual aid to help children learn and relent more.

We, now a days, are living in a highly commercialized world where privatization, money, silver screen and small screen i.e television rules and patrons of quality theater are rare. Yet theatre is growing both quantitatively and qualitatively. Even now theater is the best means of self realization and sublimation of feelings which increases concentration, imagination, confidence, communication skills which everyone needs to excel in life. So, theatre isn’t for artists alone but for all and sundry as it isn’t merely a performance but a way of life. Last but not least theatre talks about universal human emotions and values, problems. Through the most powerful medium of theatre , Dastak with a missionary zeal puts forward its first step strongly to help the individuals by providing them excellence and opportunities in theatre as a hobby , passion and career to promote rich culture of Punjab, its folk theatre forms , folk performing arts and Punjabi literature. Moreover, dastak aims to promote physical, moral, artistic and intellectual development of children. Nevertheless it is always on the agenda of Dastak to highlight the social evils of our society so as to uproot them by sensitizing the people about them by using theatre as a media.

GENERAL AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF DASTAK

1.Dastak aims to promote culture and its rich literature, folk arts by promoting theatre culture class apart by providing a wide range of opportunities to committed individuals who pursue theatre as an amateur or professional ,career and passion. To explore rich culture of Punjab, dastak promotes research on folk theatre forms ,Punjabi literature ,folk dances,folk songs especially among the children and youngsters.

2. In realizing its dream of creating a better society .Dastak aims to uproot social evils zealously by sensitizing the folks about the existing problems and by providing opportunities to artists to stage such problems amongst masses in theatre especially to the under privileged sections of the society.

3. As children will be the flag bearers of our culture and traditions. Hence, we feel it important to connect children to our cultural roots. In its quest to work for moral upliftment especially of the children, Dastak tries passionately to inculcate values of life such as truth, beauty, love to encourage practice of being sensitive in following moral values such as sincerity, commitment, dedication, devotion and most importantly such as being patient i.e having patience. Dastak also promotes life skills such as self discipline, Group work, art of discussion in conveying what one feels and thinks so as inculcate communication skills.

4. Dastak passionately dreams and works day and night for establishing theatre as a popular performing art and wants to establish theatre an independent discipline of aesthetics, and profession.

5. It is pathetic and appalling that present day human being suffers from alienation, emotionally instable, identity crisis, and with many complexes such as being ignored and having no express shallow. Hence, dastak wants to explore time’s science prove therapeutic medicinal values of theatre such as physical exercises including –Yoga, Dance, Acrobatics, and meditation to help people to overcome their physical limitation and psychological and social barriers ,so as to discover themselves, to realize their selves . It is a well proven fact that theatre in much a powerful “stress buster” that even psychiatrists and corporate houses use it to keep their employees mentally healthy.

6. Fertile land of Punjab, the five rivers have produced talents par excellence in all spheres of arts. Presently Punjab has a gigantic goldmine of talent of performing arts such as theatre. Dastak is determined to reach out to much talent to help explore their individual talents.

7. The fact i.e. audio-visual aids helps children to learn all arts and sciences best widely well searched out and established by researchers of educational psychology and educational pedagogy. Hence, theatre is a great audio-visual aid to help kid to learn, imagine, greater retention and reproduction of learned concepts of poems, plays, novels, history, civics etc. Dastak promotes this audio-visual aid through theatre skill, exercises and group discussion to produce to capsule courses on different curriculum. Moreover, a drama break can do wonders in introducing concepts to students, to arouse their interests in the subjects and to kill the monotony of book reading, writing and mugging the questions / answers.

8. To pomote literature for children through the media so as to cater to special needs of children which are always influenced by age. Presently children are made to be entertained by the same theatre, cinema, TV plays, movies and serials which are produced for grown ups. Hence, children are being given a dose of entertainment meant for adults and not for highly tender, full of imagination child. As a result a child is made to perceive a world from an adult’s perspective. Dastak wants to promote literature and theatre which is sensitive to the need of children so as to help a child to adjust well in a society – socially, psychologically and emotionally

9. Through theatre, Dastak wants to compensate the loss of studies during holidays by helping little ones to spend quality time for exploring their various physical and mental faculties so as to enhance and nourish their imagination, concentration, physical health and most importantly confidence of children. This will help a child to develop his/her overall personality. Reading and study is also to be used for the development of children.

ACADEMY NOTE (SENIORS)

“Practice makes a man perfect” holds a great significance in mastering over any art and theatre is not the exception. In its pursuit of making theatre as a popular performing art and to provide a platform for young budding theatre artists as enshrined in its objectives, Dastak regards quality training in theatre skills and practice of the same as a panacea for budding theatre artists as it realizes that it is in the training sessions which shall help theatre artists to learn and practice standard theatre skills to produce qualitative theatre and not merely performance on the stage. Dastak School of performing arts is a laboratory of theatre where not only time tested and time proven skills are learnt by budding artists but a sanctum sanctorum where experiments , innovations and creative urges find a voice and an expression. A dearth of quality institutes that impart education in theatre is generally felt in Punjab. Hence, Dastak felt it an imperative need for an academy i.e. a school of performing arts to impart theatre education and performing skills. Dastak academy shall come into existence with the sole aim of promoting the art of theatre and to impart professional training. Dastak School of performing arts shall help in shaping our commitment- growth and development of theatre into reality.

For accomplishing its worshipped high standards Dastak is blessed to have the services of highly qualifies, enlightened and greatly motivated faculty for the cause of promotion of Punjab culture, who shall guide the students in their respective fields. The Dastak School of performing arts shall have two specialized institutions i.e. one for amature professionals and young artists and another for children. The school shall offer a six month course during which intensive and extensive training of students shall be the Mantra. During this course students will be imparted education in Indian and Western theatre, acting, movement, voice and speech, mime, improvisation, stage craft, theatre architecture, scene, set, costume design etc. Along with the experts of the Dastak School of performing arts , eminent and re-known theatre persons of national and international repute will also be invited to the school as a visiting faculty for creating a bridge between the school and the current and classic theatre practices, trends, at national and international level and cinema as well.

After the successful completion of the course the students will be awarded with certificates from registered NGO- Dastak. Moreover, after the successful completion of the course the School may refer and recommend some outstanding artists for cinema auditions and to reputed national and international theatre institutions and for further study as well. The students have ample scope to excel even in the Production House of Dastak as eligible students may be selected for Repertory of Dastak. The hallmark of the course shall be a production per batch/semester which will exclusively be produced by the students of the respective batch.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF DASTAK SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS FOR SENIORS

3. While considering practical work of most importance, Dastak School of performing arts stresses on the creation of a balance between mind and body and on its maintenance by various tools such as yoga, meditation, dances etc.

“The sooner you start the better it is” holds great significance in educating little ones about the soft skills a theatre practitioner needs to produce quality theatre. In consonance with the spirit of its aims and objectives of giving a tongue, an expression to the “Creative urges” of children in specific, Dastak found it of paramount importance to provide a platform for performing theatre to children. To inculcate, nurture and nourish soft skills of theatre Dastak has exclusively dedicated a full-fledged school of performing arts to children. This branch of Dastak School of performing arts shall allow the children to have a conducive environment and a peer group of same age which will help them to express their creativity freely, which will enable them to learn more by doing. Great stress will be placed on the literature, songs, tales, plays, poems and activities of the children, which shall also helps Dastak’s cause of creating “children culture” or “culture of the children” and to promote children culture.

Dastak is proud to have launched an exclusive school of theatre for children in the entire region. To conquer its end of creating and sustaining a “children culture” Dastak is proud of its esteemed, ignited and well qualified faculty which have innumerous honors which speaks volumes of their expertise in their respective art/field of theatre, acting, movement, voice and speech, mime, improvisation, martial arts, dance etc. “Guru Mantra” of the School shall be to encourage the tiny taught to express themselves, to help themselves to adjust well in our contemporary society socially, physically and emotionally. Moreover, Dastak craves for enabling children to enjoy their childhood the most in a world, which has deprived the children of their childhood, a world which with all its business and tight schedules have made the most natural child merely a mechanical creation, a world where parents’ time is encroached upon by the daily chores and daily business and obviously the stressful world of studies where Children shoulder their parents’ Great Expectations.
